At a child nutrition town hall, Fairfield County School District leaders said the recent switch to an outside food-service partner was driven by two goals: better food choices and operational efficiency. "We decided not to wait, not to be complacent, but to offer them more choices," Finance Director Kevin Robinson said, describing students' broader food preferences and the need to reduce long cafeteria lines.
Superintendent Alvin Pressley and other panelists framed the change as part of a districtwide push to "grow Griffin greatness," with the superintendent praising cafeteria staff for working through early challenges. Pressley said the meeting was the first in a series of community conversations that will update families on child nutrition changes and give parents and students opportunities to provide feedback. The district acknowledged some items and processes did not go as planned in the first two weeks and said it has "a plan to implement things so that they improve as we move forward," Robinson said.
Panelists emphasized the district chose an outside partner because of institutional expertise the district cannot easily replicate in-house. Robinson said leaders expect a period of adjustment as staff learn new preparation methods and logistics change, but they view the transition as reversible and subject to community input. The district asked families for patience and committed to publishing menu and implementation updates publicly and to holding further town halls.
