Teachers from Newville Elementary presented the school's early experience implementing the Amplify Science curriculum in grades K–3 and described classroom activities and grade‑level topics. Teacher Heather Keller (second grade) and Danny Teter (third grade) described lessons combining hands‑on investigations, interactive digital components and literacy to engage students in science and engineering practices.
The presenters listed topics by grade: kindergarten (needs of plants and animals, pushes and pulls, sunlight and weather); first grade (plant and animal defenses, light and sound, spinning earth); second grade (relationships, properties of materials, changing land forms and Lego coding); third grade (balancing forces, inheritance and traits, environment and survival, weather and climate). They also noted that fourth and fifth grades are using an open‑ended science program and that the Cal Ripken Jr. Foundation's prior grant supports 3D printing and other STEM activities.
Board members applauded the presentation and encouraged continued use of hands‑on, real‑world projects in district elementary classrooms.
