Board approves several policy updates but tables Policy 03 for solicitor review

The Big Spring School District board considered a package of updated policies on Oct. 20 and approved four while tabling one for further legal review.
Administrators presented updates to Policies 01 (classification), 02 (authority and powers), 03 (functions), 04 (membership) and 05 (organization). The board approved Policies 01, 02, 04 and 05 after amendments: Policy 04's removal language was clarified to read that a director's eligibility ends if they no longer reside in "Big Spring School District or the region he she represents," and Policy 05 was amended to remove a reference to a "curriculum council."
Policy 03, which added a paragraph allowing the superintendent to make certain nonsubstantive changes and expedite minor revisions, drew several amendment attempts. After debate and a failed amendment to remove that paragraph (the board voted to retain the paragraph by a 6-3 margin), members moved to lay Policy 03 on the table for the solicitor to review specific amendment language. The motion to table carried. Solicitor King told the board he "reviewed them as they're written." The board directed that Policy 03 be revised or returned after legal review at a future meeting.
The board recorded votes and asked administrators to work with the solicitor to ensure policy language is clear before returning items for final action.
