CTC students describe classroom experience and credentials at Big Spring board meeting

The committee heard from two students who attend the Cumberland‑Perry Area Career & Technical Center (CTC) and share programs with Big Spring. Alexis Mattern, a level‑three early childhood education student, described coursework, CDA portfolio work, co‑op placements and acceptance to Shippensburg University.

"Good evening. My name is Alexis Mattern. I am a level three student at CPACTC in early childhood education," Mattern said, explaining that her training includes lesson planning, guidance skills, and a co‑op as an assistant teacher at a preschool in Carlisle. Later, cosmetology student Chase Barrett described the program's practical training, certifications and required hours for graduation: "We need 1250 to graduate," he said, and noted internships that provided real‑world salon experience.

CTC representatives told the board that Big Spring students earned a substantial number of industry credentials and that outcomes for program completers were strong. The CTC rep highlighted that students earned industry certifications ranging from CNA and dental assisting credentials to trade‑specific licenses and that cooperative education placements give students paid or credit‑bearing workplace experiences. Board members thanked the students and encouraged continued collaboration and site visits to the CTC.
