Towanda administrators told the Sports & Supplemental Committee they will provide clearer direction to coaches about eligibility and consider additional review mechanisms if cuts are needed.
Superintendent Erick Cummings said coaches should receive explicit instructions so athletes maintain eligibility, noting that while PIAA expectations apply to JV and varsity, junior-high athletics do not have mandatory playing rules. "The coaches need to have explicit directions to make sure the athletes maintain eligibility," Mr. Cummings stated.
Athletic Director Jack Young recommended that head coaches make roster recommendations and that, if cuts are required, independent evaluators could review why an athlete did not meet standards. He said independent evaluators would "bring merit" to decisions about cuts, though some public commenters expressed concerns about evaluators assessing students when they are absent.
Committee members discussed a possible conditioning or physical-training program to support eligibility; details and how the program would be applied were left for future discussion.
The committee did not adopt a formal eligibility policy during the meeting but set an administrative deadline for final rosters on Aug. 10, 2026.
