District staff reported the first enrollment count of the year as 1,548 'heads,' with kindergarten enrollment at 102 and a district average kindergarten class size around 123. The superintendent said some grades saw unexpected increases that will factor into staffing and budgeting decisions.
The superintendent also briefed the board on the state budget outlook, saying agencies were asked Oct. 1 to prepare reduction plans of up to 5% in response to lower federal tax receipts; the district expects to monitor implications for SIA, Measure 98 and high-school-success funding and will re-evaluate in November and December when economic forecasts are released. "1548 is the number of heads," the superintendent stated; later he noted agencies were asked "to come up with a reduction plan of up to 5%."
