Mrs. Esser, a district staff member, told the board the district ran a range of summer programs this year — sports camps, a kinder jump‑start, migrant summer school and transition camps for grades 4, 6 and 9 — with roughly 175 students participating across activities.
The presenter said the district added a literacy component to sports camps to satisfy a late-arriving summer-school grant and partnered with Eastern Oregon University and a YMCA tutoring program for targeted literacy work. “Of those 55, 87% made growth over the summer,” Mrs. Esser said, citing the pre/post assessments available for a subset of participants. The report noted 75 students signed up for the YMCA tutoring and 73 attended at least once; staff were able to collect full assessment data on 55 students.
Board members asked about participation thresholds and assessment timing; staff suggested moving the post‑assessment date earlier or shortening the program to ensure higher post‑test completion. The board also discussed outreach to improve kindergarten attendance, which staff said remains a district concern at roughly 100–103 incoming kinders this term.
The report recommended continuing literacy supports and using targeted attendance contingencies (for example, minimum weeks attended to qualify for incentives) to maximize both participation and evaluable outcomes. No formal action was required.
