Commission to present library programs and community impacts at April 21 joint meeting

The Bridal Public Library Commission set plans to present its programs and community impact to the city council at a joint meeting on Tuesday, April 21, which falls during National Library Week. Chair Bellows opened the discussion and staff urged commissioners to participate in delivering the message to council.

Melinda, the library staff member coordinating the presentation, told commissioners the meeting occurs "in the middle of National Library Week" and invited them to remain for a council proclamation recognizing the week. She reviewed last year’s joint meeting topics — strategic planning, policy review and usage statistics — and asked the commission for ideas on what to include this year.

Commissioners proposed combining quantitative usage data with short qualitative anecdotes from patrons. One commissioner suggested preparing comparative data across years to demonstrate growth and demand; another recommended collecting brief patron quotes to illustrate program impact. As one commissioner put it, "But I like data," when urging numerical comparisons to show increases in use.

Melinda said staff will prepare an outline and divide talking points but emphasized that requests for personnel or program funding should come from commissioners themselves, not staff. She asked commissioners to confirm attendance and speaking participation by roughly the Friday before the agenda is posted; "So can y'all let me know maybe by, I think it's the 11th," she said.

The commission agreed to prioritize a concise set of takeaways for council — highlighting the library’s reach, accessibility for people with disabilities and bilingual offerings — and to assign speaking roles so each commissioner can share a short, personal example during the joint meeting.
