Resident urges council to fix 'debacles' and improve transparency

Joe McColl used his public-comment time at the Seabrook City Council meeting on Jan. 20 to criticize what he called longstanding failures in city projects and communications and to urge more public accountability.

"So first off, you have the fire station. That was a debacle," McColl said, listing a series of local complaints including an unfinished pier, fence disputes at Pine Gully, missing street signs, and what he described as slow repairs to Main Street lighting. McColl, who said he served eight years inside local government, accused council of stifling concerns in executive session and failing to act in public forums.

Gary Johnson, another speaker during the public-comment period, invited council to a private groundbreaking: "I'd like to personally invite all of city council to our groundbreaking ceremony on January 31st on behalf of HS Development Group and Sever Properties LLC," he said, and distributed invitations to council members.

Council members did not take immediate action in response to the complaints during the public-comment period. Several councilors later said they would address some of McColl's claims in future meetings or review the concerns offline.

The public-comment period is limited to four minutes per speaker and is intended for matters of city business and public interest. The council moved on to agenda items following the two speakers' remarks.
