Whitehall School District Principal reported a slight rise in elementary enrollment and highlighted interim winter-assessment results that show Whitehall Elementary performing well above state averages in both English language arts and math.
"Well, at Whiteall Elementary, we in the in ELA, we doubled the state average," the Principal said, adding that math scores were "a minimum 66% higher at every grade level." He and other staff cautioned these published figures come from an interim assessment that covers only a portion of grade-level standards and is not a substitute for end-of-year mastery measures.
Mrs. Nissins, who attended the assessment briefings, told the board the interim scores represent a subset of content and that the district will use two additional assessments later in the year to measure full-year mastery. "It's only a portion of the standards that the kids test on," she said, urging the board and community to view the results as an encouraging sign rather than a final judgment.
District officials said teachers should be praised for progress and encouraged to continue strong instruction through the remainder of the school year. The principal said the district will monitor upcoming assessments before drawing longer-term conclusions.
