Commission backs GEIC housing direction and tables two-home relocation to explore alternatives

On March 3 the Athens-Clarke County commission approved a resolution asking planning staff and the planning commission to convert a set of Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GEIC) concepts into ordinance language — covering items such as accessory dwelling units, reduced lot sizes, and adjustments to parking minimums — and then tabled action on a separate staff recommendation regarding two homes on Puritan Lane and Mon Highway.

The GEIC resolution, which passed 8–1 after debate about guidance and neighborhood impacts, directs planning staff to craft ordinance text for later hearings. Supporters said the recommendations target regulatory barriers that historically limited housing supply; some commissioners urged careful attention to infrastructure and neighborhood character, especially in older, densely settled areas.

Separately, Commissioner Thornton proposed and the commission agreed to table a proposal related to two historic homes to allow staff to pursue alternatives, including possible transfer to the Athens Land Trust and revised cost estimates. A substitute motion to deny funding for relocation failed on roll call after an emotionally charged exchange in which one commissioner described the social consequences of failing to preserve a small number of homes. The commission asked staff for a report back by the June voting meeting with options and cost updates.
