Lindsay Mullen, co-director of the 21st Century program, briefed the board on the federal grant cycle, said the program experienced a rough start this year due to federal and state timing changes, and explained the district is currently in a monitoring year that requires extra documentation and reporting. Mullen described three focus areas — K–12 expansion, family engagement, and career readiness — and said career-readiness targets were not met in state metrics this year.
Mullen asked for community support to fill K–5 staffing needs and to provide single-session career-readiness experiences for students; she said the program compensates staff for time beyond the regular day and highlighted recent student opportunities including Model UN (where the district paid entrance fees) and academic Olympics. “We’re reaching a lot of kids and it is a lot of time out of school hours that we are fortunate that we’ve had a lot of school day staff,” Mullen said, and she invited board members to help spread word about openings and volunteer opportunities.
