Seaside SD reports summer school gains but says late state funding limited capacity
Summary
Administrators said expanded summer literacy programs produced measurable gains (20 of 23 assessed elementary students showed growth on multiple measures; high-school credit recovery generated 36 half‑credits so far), but late notification of state funds constrained recruitment and staffing this year.

Seaside School District administrators reported that expanded summer programming this year focused on literacy and transitional supports produced measurable student growth, but staff said the late timing of state grant notice limited overall capacity.
Grace Clunky, elementary summer coordinator, described small-class literacy work and jump‑start kindergarten: "we had 29 kids there that focused like Kate said, everything was so literacy focused." She said 23 students completed both pre- and post-assessments and staff saw growth across multiple domains for most students. High‑school credit recovery staff reported that "As of yesterday, 36 half credits have been earned," with additional students on track to finish as school begins.
Board members pressed staff on whether more students could have been served if planning and state notifications arrived earlier. Administrators said planning in January and earlier staff recruitment would expand capacity next year; some programming this year was funded from the general fund when state timing precluded earlier staffing commitments. The district also noted Department of Education praise for the summer programming.
