Seaside School District administrators told the board that the district's local option levy will be up for renewal on the May 19 ballot and is critical to staffing.
"These funds that we receive, um, fund approximately 14 teaching positions," Superintendent Miss Eller said, explaining the difference between levies and bonds and stressing that the renewal is intended to maintain the current rate rather than increase taxes. She told board members the district plans outreach to explain the levy to voters.
Why it matters: Board members flagged the last renewal occurred during the COVID period when outreach was limited, and asked about how closely the district tracks margin of passage. Miss Eller said the levy has historically passed in the district and the district will provide FAQ materials to board members and the community so they can answer questions. The superintendent gave the current levy rate as "52 cents per 1,000 of the assessed value," and emphasized the district is committed to not increasing that rate.
Next steps: District staff said they will develop communications and engagement as the ballot approaches. No formal levy measure language was introduced at the meeting; the board only heard the staff report and discussed outreach and past voting performance.
