Resident proposes small community garden; board suggests a demonstration-garden approach

Kelsey, a Treasure Island resident and volunteer with the Urban Oasis project, presented a small-scale community-garden concept and asked for the board's feedback and support. She said the pilot could start in the fall with a few movable beds or bag-planters that could be relocated if park plans change.

"I was thinking maybe, like, max 3 to 5 beds. I'd wanna keep it very small or even I personally just use row bags, so I'm open to whatever makes it work in the space," Kelsey said. She suggested produce could be given away to residents and that she would volunteer to help start and maintain the pilot.

Board members supported a modest pilot but urged framing the project as a demonstration garden to emphasize educational programming for children and seniors. One member noted water access and space constraints on the main park and proposed using the house that will be demolished near Pirate's Alley as an interim garden site. Public-works updates referenced a mayor-led charrette for long-term park design and short-term options to grade and sod a field to make it usable for summer activities.

Members asked staff to explore site options and return with a short proposal the board could finalize and present to the commission for administrative approval.
