Commission hears details on waste handling, MPCA oversight for proposed paint booth

Environmental controls and waste-handling were a key focus as commissioners vetted the interim use permit application. Amy, Land Services staff, said oversight of emissions and proper storage "falls under the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency," and added the county will require compliance with its industrial solid waste management plan and may inspect records to confirm hazardous-waste removal and disposal.

Applicant Jody Kern described operational plans to minimize waste by using a mixing station and by contracting commercial vendors: "Plan is to have a mixing station ... and there is a company called Loop Tech that comes around and disposes of that," Kern said. Staff and commissioners referenced a 1,000-gallon holding tank for the floor drain and noted that paint booths will be outfitted with filters; commissioners indicated those safeguards, combined with licensed hazardous-waste removal, supported an affirmative finding that groundwater and air quality would not be adversely affected.
