Patchogue task force outlines climate-change adaptation planning effort

Members of Patchogue’s Climate Smart Task Force told the board they are participating in a Long Island regional cohort with a partner (transcript: 'Iseli, local governments for sustainability') to create a Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Plan (CCRP). The statement emphasized measurable regional trends—more extreme heat, heavier rainfall, rising sea levels and more frequent coastal/high-tide flooding—and said the CCRP will identify vulnerabilities, exposures of critical assets, and adaptation strategies for future capital planning.

Task-force members stressed the project is planning-oriented. "No regulatory changes or policy actions are being proposed at this time," a member said, and the task force will return with findings and recommendations as the process advances. The board outlined plans for a general meeting and a workshop cadence over the coming months and noted the technical complexity of the work.

Speakers highlighted that the plan’s outputs will be used for consideration in capital and infrastructure decisions and recommended public engagement on near-term design alternatives for shoreline assets.
