Commission trims stargazing request, approves event pending invoice confirmation

The commission considered a request to fund an annual stargazing event at the Van Black Observatory (Moss Hill) on Oct. 9. The packet listed a $600 request; commissioners debated the amount and whether it would consume a sizable portion of the community-events budget.

A commissioner proposed approving the event at a lower amount to enable immediate promotion. The chair and other members moved to amend the motion to the lower figure and the amendment passed. The commission then voted to fund the event at the amended amount and approved it by unanimous consent. Because the transcript records an apparent transcription error (the amended number was recorded once as "$4.50" in the minutes transcript), staff will confirm the intended amended amount (recorded in discussion as $450) and update the packet and public notice accordingly.

Fort reminded commissioners the commission has multiple pools of money (community-events program vs. grant-derived allocations) and suggested the agenda track community-events spending so members can see cumulative approvals and remaining capacity. Commissioners asked staff to follow up with the event lead, Steph(anie) Dean, to confirm exact costs and commitments before broader promotion.
