The Palisades SD Education Policy Subcommittee reviewed a planned course statement for a new sixth-grade digital literacy elective that will replace the older computers curriculum and center on Chromebooks, AI awareness and daily keyboard fluency. Dr. Donnelly told the committee the course will use district tools like Typing Agent for keyboarding and Google Gemini and Google Notebook LM under district protections for units on artificial intelligence, with culminating student projects presented in a gallery walk.
Dr. Donnelly emphasized alignment with new state guidance, calling the timing “very timely” as federal and state requirements shift toward digital literacy. “I don't want to, you know, pat ourselves on the back, but we might as well ahead of the curve,” she said. Committee members asked for classroom examples, teacher-selected student presentations in spring, and confirmation that the course is a semester-long marking-period option. Staff confirmed the item will be placed on the full board agenda next week for board approval.
