KCBA project staff presented a first change order to the auditorium electrical contractor to restore components needed for the motorized lighting system. The firm said alternate bid choices during procurement removed motorized hoists and yielded a $184,000 credit from the general contractor, but the electrical alternate that would have added three onstage lighting connector strips was not accepted at the time. KCBA recommended accepting the electrical alternate now so the lighting system functions as designed; the electrical contractor will honor the bid day price of $24,022 for that work.
A trustee pushed the presenters to accept responsibility for the oversight, and others asked that the district’s legal and contract reviewers examine the change‑order paperwork (the G71/ENO package) to determine whether the cost obligation lies with the consultant, the contractor, or the district. The presenter said the change order is still within the planned project contingency (the recommended contingency had been ~5% of construction), but board members emphasized they wanted solicitor review of the contract language and final recommendation back to the board before any payment.
"The change order is to put in the connection so that the lights work," the KCBA presenter said; trustees did not vote at the meeting and directed staff to route the change‑order documents to legal.
