The Big Spring School District board voted on Sept. 2 to refer Policy 04.1, the district policy on a student representative to the board, back to the policy committee for further review and possible amendment after public comment raised questions about the policy's wording and eligibility criteria.
Public commenter Steve Ganter and others asked for clearer language on the policy's stated objectives, selection procedures and whether petition signers must be juniors or seniors. Laura Kaufman — speaking later on related governance concerns — argued the board's representative to the Capitol Area Intermediate Unit had not attended CIU meetings and used that as part of a broader call for transparency; she asked the board or solicitor to review compliance with the Sunshine Act and Robert's Rules. "I would like to formally request that this board conduct or direct the solicitor conduct a review regarding Mr. Corman's failures to fulfill his obligations as a school board director," Kaufman said.
Board members discussed parliamentary procedure and whether to table or amend the policy that night. Rather than bringing the item to final vote, the board voted to refer Policy 04.1 back to committee so members and staff could propose clearer language and consider recommended amendments before it returns to the full board.
