CFISD efficiency audit: district ranks efficient but faces large budget gap

The Cypress‑Fairbanks ISD board heard results of an efficiency audit by Weaver & Tidwell that compared CFISD to 10 peer districts and state averages. Auditor Greg Peterson summarized key findings, saying, "the district generated $11,330 per student compared to the peer districts, which had $12,592, and the state, which generated $13,256 per student." The audit also reported an accountability score of 85 (a 'B') and a 24‑25 first rating of 'A' for financial reporting.

Board members used the presentation to press for context behind the numbers. Trustees and administration highlighted that the district spends a larger percentage of its budget on classroom instruction while generating less revenue per student because of the district's 20% local optional homestead exemption. Dr. Lane commended staff: "we are working efficiently as possible right now," while noting the gap between efficiency and the overall budget shortfall. The audit and trustees' discussion framed the district's financial condition as one where operational efficiency exists alongside structural revenue limits and declining enrollment.
