South Milwaukee School Board approves consent items, salaries and a meal-debt grant

The School District of South Milwaukee Board met May 6, 2026, and adopted a revised consent agenda that included approval of bills for payment totaling $1,543,404.15, minutes of the April 29 meeting, staffing actions and policy readings. President Sophia Williams called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m.; all members were present except Ms. DeFord, who was excused.

"Moved by Ellis and seconded by Hansen that the Board approve the revised consent agenda as follows," the minutes record. The motion carried by roll call vote, 6-0. The staffing approvals included the hire of Christa Karber and Haley Mallonee as elementary teachers for the 2026-27 school year.

Separately, the board approved the 2026-27 salaries and pay rates for administrators, exempt staff, operations staff and nutrition services staff after that item was removed from the consent agenda and discussed. The motion to adopt the salaries was moved by Ms. Ellis and seconded by Hansen; Ellis, Genduso, Hansen, Simmons and Williams voted aye and Ms. Elliott abstained. Donations totaling $2,104 were also accepted at the meeting.

The board also approved second readings of revised policies 175 (School District Meetings), 621 (Budget Process), 761 (Food Service Management) and 762 (Free and Reduced Price Meals), and adopted new policies 667 (Fraud Prevention and Reporting), 734 (Indoor Environmental Quality Management) and 735 (Asbestos Management).
