District rolls out common behavior matrix and Conscious Discipline; suspensions down while incident reporting rises

Deputy Superintendent Rebecca Burton presented a districtwide initiative to standardize responses to student behavior: a detailed behavior and discipline matrix that pairs infractions with progressive responses and skill-building, a common-assurance data tool for continuous improvement, and a Conscious Discipline Tier‑1 training program for staff. Burton described the matrix as providing specific guidance for each infraction and focusing on teaching skills alongside appropriate consequences.

Early checks suggest a decline in suspensions (from about 1.71% last year to about 0.8% currently) while the number of recorded discipline infractions rose—staff attributed the latter partly to improved reporting as administrators and teachers adopt the new system. Trustees applauded the matrix’s clarity and urged robust family communication; district staff said family workshops will be scheduled in spring to explain Conscious Discipline and how families can support self‑regulation at home.
