Research shows small entrepreneurial center could support Terrell startups; board urged to pilot programs first

Matthew Warnock presented research on the feasibility of an entrepreneurial center for Terrell, using Doss Greenhouse in Boerne, Texas as a comparable model. He told the board that the distinguishing factor in successful centers is program quality rather than square footage and recommended piloting programming and mentorship before building dedicated space.

"I do believe that Terrell would benefit from an entrepreneurial center," Warnock said, summarizing his conclusion after examining several centers. He highlighted features commonly associated with success: flexible space, mentorship and student engagement programs, and connections between entrepreneurs and experienced professionals.

The board asked for concrete examples of businesses that might use a center and how mentorship would be administered; Warnock and other board members discussed membership models, outreach through utility billing inserts, and field trips to comparable centers. Several members emphasized testing programs before committing to construction to ensure demand and to design programming that addresses local needs such as staffing and accounting.
