Baldwin County officials and local principals warn separation would reduce shared services and risk programs

Representatives of the Baldwin County Board of Education presented details about recent investments in Fairhope feeder schools and defended the county’s ability to deliver specialized services across a large district. A county speaker said more than $25 million had been spent on capital and infrastructure in Fairhope area schools over the past five years, and an athletic project of $8–10 million was under consideration.

John Cordwell, Fairhope High School principal, and several teachers emphasized that county scale enables shared curriculum specialists, special‑education staff and expensive program access such as Baldwin Prep. Cordwell warned that if the feeder pattern were materially reduced the state‑funded foundation units and per‑student allocations could leave the district unable to sustain current elective and enrichment offerings.

Bowen County speakers and teachers urged caution and called for fuller accounting of pulled costs. County leaders also noted that starting a district requires an experienced administrative team and that prior breakaways have required substantial financial settlements. County and school officials said they are open to cooperative solutions to growth pressures but cautioned that separation would not automatically preserve all current programs.
