Fall athletics improve but remain short of covering coaching costs, district report shows
Summary
District athletics collected roughly $14,200 in activity fees and reported smaller deficits than last year in several fall sports, but overall program expenses — especially coaching and winter-season travel — mean the district expects to be net negative by the end of winter.

Staff presented a seasonal athletics finance report showing improvement in several programs but continuing shortfalls once coaching costs are considered. Volleyball ended the fall season about $1,619 in the red, and football about $1,355 short; staff said those figures represent an improvement from last year when the district ran larger deficits. The report attributed much of the cost pressure to officials’ fees and travel expenses, and noted that middle-school sports typically register losses because the district does not charge admission for those events.
The district also highlighted transportation savings from new 12- and 15-passenger vans, which staff said have reduced the need for large school-bus trips and associated driver downtime. “That is a great cost savings for us already as far as Athletics,” the presenter said when describing reduced busing costs. Staff said winter sports (basketball, wrestling) remain the most expensive season and projected the athletics activity account will be negative by the end of winter despite recent improvements.
