Tyler County approves Deadco grant to fund spring community cleanup events

Tyler County’s commissioners on Thursday ratified a Deadco Regional Solid Waste Grant to fund neighborhood cleanup events and one 30-yard roll-off dumpster per precinct.

The presiding officer said the plan is to hold two one-day events in the spring — proposed for March and April — so residents can dispose of large items such as couches, mattresses and televisions. “We will have uh each precinct mar we'll have a 30 yard roll off dumpster and uh we'll have two one-day events,” the presiding officer said during the discussion. Commissioners noted 11 jurisdictions applied for the grant and that award amounts will be reduced accordingly.

Commissioners discussed logistics and potential local costs. The presenter told the court the county would contract with local sanitation vendors for pickups and that, in a high-response scenario, the county might incur an additional pickup fee (the presenter estimated a possible $800 charge for an extra dump). Supporters said the events recall a prior community cleanup program and would reduce roadside dumping.

The court carried a motion and second to ratify the grant by voice vote. The motion was introduced and seconded and the court voted in favor.
