Point Isabel presents midyear plan for Berea Elementary after ATS identification

Point Isabel ISD curriculum staff reported on a midyear Local Improvement Plan update for Berea Elementary, which the district said had been designated for Additional Targeted Support (ATS) in special populations. The presentation framed ATS as an identification after three consecutive years of missed targets in the same student group and described a multi-tiered response to accelerate achievement.

Valerie Leblanc summarized the supports in place: tier-one implementation of a highly qualified instructional material (HQIM) curriculum, a tri-literacy grant targeting comprehension for emergent bilinguals and special education (tier two), United Way interventions focused on phonics (tier three), weekly PLCs, six-week cycles with Region One for lesson internalization and classroom walkthroughs, and use of a teach tracker to monitor individual student progress. Leblanc said, "teachers participate in PLC's every single week," and staff described targeted growth goals that prioritize measurable student growth as the path to exiting ATS.

Board members asked about vertical alignment and classroom-level coaching; staff said Region One supports alignment K'3 and that the district runs regular product walkthroughs, learning walks and additional planning days for teachers. The presentation noted the district is setting targets above state expectations to accelerate improvement and plans continued monitoring every six weeks.
