Committee members on Aug. 17 discussed exploring a discretionary stipend program for support staff intended to reward exceptional work or cost‑saving ideas, but members raised concerns about fairness, eligibility, and budgetary limits.
"I believe that this centered mostly on support staff salary and recognition for work that is being done by the support staff," a committee member said while framing the request for further exploration. Committee members noted the district currently uses CPI adjustments and step increases and does not have a formal bonus or discretionary pay program. One committee member relayed that a head custodian had suggested "every janitor has ideas that would save the district $1,000" as an example of savings that could trigger recognition.
Members asked who would determine awards and how the district would establish objective parameters to avoid subjective or ad‑hoc payments. Staff said they will work with the superintendent and bring back a set of ideas for later HR committee consideration rather than taking immediate action; the committee agreed to defer detailed policy design until staff returns with concrete proposals.
The committee emphasized any stipend program would need to work within the district's financial constraints and be structured to avoid inequitable outcomes. No formal stipend program was approved; next steps are staff development of possible approaches for a future meeting.
