Superintendent Flags New State Cell-Phone Law, Prompts Policy Discussion

The superintendent told the School District of St. Croix Falls board that a new state cell-phone law "was signed by the Governor requiring Districts to have policies restricting cell phone use during instructional time," and recommended the board consider whether to change the district’s current practices.
The minutes record the district’s present approach: elementary schools ban phones entirely; the middle school allows phones before and after school and during lunch; and the high school allows phones any time students are not in class. The superintendent said principals Mike Wilson and Kris Wallace collected staff feedback that generally supported the current approach but that the new law provides an opportunity to review and, if desired, adopt more restrictive rules. The superintendent also said staff survey work aimed at retention and workplace satisfaction is under development and planned for distribution by Thanksgiving.
