District reports small gain in student self-regulation; plans expanded SEL lessons

Superintendent Deidre Roemer told the board that one of the skills students in grades 6-12 identify as an area for improvement is self-regulation. She reported that "39% of our 6-12 students report favorably" on questions about regulating emotions and responding thoughtfully, an increase from 36% last year.
Roemer said the district will continue embedding social-emotional learning (SEL) skills such as perseverance, regulation and relationship building across classes and add specific lessons to advisory and CREW. The presentation framed SEL work as important to post-secondary and employment success; the board discussed the item as an ongoing area of focus rather than a single action item.
