Howard County Council takes public testimony on multiple board and commission appointments

Council opened its March legislative public hearing and read a string of appointment resolutions for local advisory boards and commissions.

Valoria Walker, who said she has worked 17 years at Howard County General Hospital (now Johns Hopkins) and holds a master's in management of aging services from UMBC, testified in support of her appointment to the Commission on Aging and spoke about her experience as a director of activities at Lorient Health Services. John Mobley, nominated to the Board of Electrical Examiners, described his work as a master electrician, small-business owner and U.S. Air Force veteran. Melissa Turlaughey introduced herself as chief government relations officer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and explained her interest in serving on the Howard County Economic Development Authority board.

None of the appointment items recorded a final vote during the public hearing; the council scheduled follow-up work session and legislative session dates for later in March and April. The hearing provided the council and the public an opportunity to ask nominees about their qualifications and motivations before any formal council action.
