Community ISD board approves immediate high‑school safety measures in unanimous vote

The Community ISD Board of Trustees on Oct. 7 authorized the superintendent to work with the chief of police to implement immediate safety and security measures at the high school and at athletic events.

The motion, made by Jessica Foster and seconded by Jeff Cox, passed 5–0. The measures listed in the approved motion include deployment of appropriate weapon‑detection systems; utilization of a K‑9 unit for enhanced threat detection; hiring additional security personnel including a designated supervisor; a clear‑bag policy at the high school and at sporting events; ongoing safety drills; and enforcement of the student dress code. The board also directed a comprehensive review of current safety parameters to evaluate effectiveness and whether additional resources are needed.

Board members voting in favor were Jeff Cox, Jessica Foster, Jana Hunter, Josh Saenz and Sean Walker. The motion and vote were recorded in the meeting minutes and reflected immediate district direction rather than a binding change to long‑term policy; the board directed staff to implement and report back.

The vote followed an information item in which Chief S. Morrison presented on high‑school safety protocols and a public‑comment period where four residents addressed the board about safety concerns. The board met in closed session earlier in the evening on personnel matters under Section 551.074 of the Texas Government Code; no personnel actions were disclosed during open session.

Next steps listed in the motion assign the superintendent to coordinate with the police chief on procurement and operational details and to return to the board with findings from the comprehensive review.
