EDA discusses catalytic-project priorities, site identification and potential low-interest loan fund

Staff asked the board to confirm its prior direction on several catalytic-project ideas drawn from earlier meetings and the economic-development strategic plan. The items discussed included agribusiness and food-processing equipment and infrastructure, a potential low- or no-interest loan fund administered with partners (for example CIC or the Small Business Development Center), and a site-identification and characterization process to ready potential sites for development.

"This is really just a listening check to ensure that we got what we heard last time down clearly," staff said, and briefed directors on plans to convene stakeholder roundtables and to use a Timmins engineering site-identification study (results expected by the end of the calendar year) to prioritize two or three sites for further work. Staff also said the EDA has grant funding available for site-characterization work and that business-attraction and storytelling/branding should follow after initial site readiness is established.

Board members offered general agreement with the summary and encouraged staff to proceed with stakeholder engagement and the forthcoming site study. The item was framed as direction to staff rather than as a formal voteable action.
