Coppell ISD to implement HMH 'Into Reading' after STAR results show small dip

Sabrina Khan, director of elementary literacy, told the board that 89% of third graders scored in the 'approaches or above' band on the spring 2026 STAR reading-language-arts assessment while 74% met or mastered the standard, short of the district's 78% target for the year.

"Our yearly target for 2026 was to reach 78 percent of 3rd graders that meet or master the STAR RLA assessment," Khan said. "While we did not make that goal of 78% this year . . . we did hit the target that came right before in 2025." She added that state and regional trends showed similar declines and that the district adjusted goals and supports accordingly.

To strengthen early literacy and vertical alignment, Khan said the district will implement the HMH Into Reading curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade in both English and Spanish. "Into Reading scored a 100 on each rubric component for each grade level in English and in Spanish, proving that this curriculum is 100% aligned to our Texas essential knowledge and skills," she said. Staff described districtwide access to digital and physical instructional materials, unit previews for grade-level teams and classroom-visit data collection tied to professional learning.

Khan told trustees the district will also emphasize constructed-response writing (the ECR), which accounted for a substantial portion of third-grade STAR RLA points. Presenters described the rubric and scoring pipeline and said staff requested rescoring on approximately 260 responses; more than 80 of those rescored items changed a student's score and adjusted the reported percentage.

District leaders said implementation will be supported by professional learning, unit previews, and data collection in classrooms to monitor fidelity and student progress; board members asked for parent-facing resources and clear communication about how families can support early literacy at home.
