Academy of Performing Arts presents charter application; board pauses for questions

The Academy of Performing Arts planning team presented a charter application to the Cherokee County School Board, highlighting more than 30 local partners, a five‑year budget and named consultants for financial and professional‑development support. The applicants said they had engaged accounting and curriculum specialists and were pursuing grants and financing to support facilities and instruments.

"The true issue before you is education, the future of our children," said Waseena White Fowler, a planning‑committee member who described her volunteer work and academic background in Gaffney. The team said the school will use the Core Knowledge curriculum with arts integration and that a principal chosen by the school's governing body would run day‑to‑day operations if the charter is approved.

Board members pressed the applicants on enrollment and finance, including how state funding would flow if students moved from district schools to the charter. The applicants said, as they put it, that "the money follows the child" and described multiple funding paths, including bridge financing and grant partnerships for facilities and instruments. No vote or final decision on the application was recorded in the segment; the presentation portion of the meeting was adjourned after questions.
