Board member raises constituent complaint: leaf pickup often coincides with garbage collection

A committee member raised a constituent concern that city leaf pickup often occurs the same day residents must put out their garbage, complicating curbside collection.

"I had a citizen complain to me because they pick up leaves at the same time that they have to have their garbage cans out," the committee member said, asking whether pickups could be coordinated better. Director Gerber responded that scheduling is difficult to perfectly coordinate because crews try to sequence neighborhoods—"we started on the South Side...and work our way north"—and that conditions on the previous day can affect whether crews can reach an area on the planned day.

Staff said crews frequently return through neighborhoods multiple times and try to avoid overlap between leaf pickup and garbage collection, but factors such as prior-day progress and route timing make exact coordination challenging. The board did not make a policy change on the item; the concern was noted under business presented by members.
