Stanwood-Camano board frames five strategic goals, debates adding advocacy

The Stanwood-Camano School District Board of Directors met in a special study session on Aug. 18 and reviewed a draft of five board goals tied to the WASDA framework. The Chair said the five goals were chosen to be fewer and more meaningful and to include measurable items tied to district priorities.

Board members discussed whether advocacy should be a standalone goal or be embedded as action items beneath each standard. One director proposed a single overarching advocacy goal; others argued advocacy could be captured in Standard 5 or listed as an action item. The Chair said the board would "add advocacy as needed" in action items rather than change all goal language. Members also agreed to require budget training for the board as an actionable measurable and asked the superintendent to propose timelines and measurable items for the superintendent-evaluation framework ahead of a Sept. 15 study session.

The session included discussion of five discrete goals — fiscal leadership, learning expectations (including a K–5 SEL rollout), creating conditions for improvement through resource allocation, policy review, and community engagement. The Chair said the draft goal language would be posted in the Friday packet and, barring edits, placed on the board website for public review.
