Prudential Committee tables boundary change with Smith property after member recusal

The Weathersfield Prudential Committee on Aug. 19 tabled consideration of a proposed boundary-line adjustment involving Steven R. Smith Real Property LLC after Prudential Committee member Wendy Smith recused herself and residents objected.

Wendy Smith said she would be representing Country Estates and described her ownership interest in the water system and the adjoining mobile home park; she told the Committee she and Steve Smith retained the end of the road for dumping after the sale of the system. Committee member Diana Stillson summarized a July 29, 2026 letter from Brad M. Ruderman of Sheehey Furlong & Behm PC saying the Ascutney Fire District seeks to merge part of L 6-22 with Lot 9-30 and that a survey would cost $3,500. Resident Jeff Slade objected, saying, "we can’t go backwards. There is a greenbelt (protection guard) for this area. Burning the pile down there does not protect the water system." Resident Lisa Slade said she had asked for a copy of the original sales agreement and had heard the Smiths were paid $1 million; Wendy Smith said she and Steve Smith received $250,000 and would look for the written agreement.

After discussion, Chair William Southard moved to table the item to the Committee’s next meeting on Sept. 16; Diana Stillson seconded and the motion passed. Committee members asked for documentation, including any written sale agreement and the proposed survey estimate, before the next meeting.
