Mayor Beto Lopez frames 'legacy' amid rapid growth in Lee's Summit

Mayor Beto Lopez opened the State of the City address by thanking elected officials, city staff and community partners before laying out a central theme: legacy.

"Legacy is not simply what came before us. It's the foundation we inherited," Mayor Beto Lopez said, framing the city's growth as a responsibility to preserve community character even as Lee's Summit expands. He noted the city now supports "more than 108,000 residents" and argued that growth must be managed to protect neighborhoods and the sense of connection residents cited in a pre-assembly video.

Lopez pointed to the city's professionalized departments and a five-year capital improvement plan that coordinates investments in roads, water and parks. He said the city must improve how it communicates with residents during difficult decisions and stressed the need for departmental alignment: "We are 1 city. 1 city, 1 brand," he said. The mayor also acknowledged regional partners and community organizations that support local services.

Lopez closed by urging continued stewardship and community involvement, saying the choices made now will shape the city "for the next generation." The address included a video of longtime residents reflecting on Lee's Summit's small-town past and modern diversity, a personal anecdote from a resident, and a short poem the mayor read to underscore the legacy theme.
