Board debates makeup days, e-learning quality and equity after winter closures

Trustees spent significant time discussing the district's response to a recent winter weather event and whether makeup days should take precedence over e-learning. Superintendent Robert Fitzpatrick (speaker 9) argued that face-to-face makeups are preferable for student learning and said he favors using built-in makeup days first, with e-learning as a backup when makeups are exhausted. "E-learning, of course, is not optimal for student learning," Fitzpatrick said, adding that in-person instructional time is preferable.

Several trustees pressed for clearer communication and equity protections for students who rely on bus transportation and whose roads remained impassable. One trustee said parents who rely on buses may not be able to bring children to alternate pickup points and called existing e-learning assignments "busy work." Operations staff described a new road-priority log to identify low-sunlight roads that stay icy longer and discussed using the RealShare notification system; trustees asked for an after-hours contact or live-chat option to answer parents' timing and route questions during weather events. The superintendent clarified that absences due to impassable roads are excused for the recent event.
