Public urges broader outreach for library board nominations; staff seeks self‑check system and programming funds

A member of the public questioned the county’s library nomination procedures and urged the board to broaden outreach and diversify programming. Martin Conkle said some past library committees had functioned as "a bit of a social club" and urged greater effort on marketing, outreach and seeking outside funding to reduce taxpayer pressure. "I've seen the library... it's been a bit exclusive, and it shouldn't be," Conkle said during public comment, and he offered to serve if the board thinks his efforts would help.

Separately, library staff described a plan to buy a self‑check system to speed check‑in and check‑out processes and to reallocate $5,000 from the book budget to expand programming for adults. The staff member explained the system "does both" check‑in and check‑out and said heavy patron counts made the upgrade worthwhile; they added they would bring comparative usage and programming numbers to a future meeting. The library nominations on the agenda were postponed to the next meeting so resumes and contact information could be provided at least two weeks in advance.
