Monitoring wells replaced; consultants preparing technical analysis for DEP to clarify PFAS source

Magnuson told the board that five of the seven original monitoring wells were installed through waste and did not meet long-term monitoring protocol, so the team has replaced two wells and abandoned the old in-waste wells. He said the project will replace two more wells when site grading allows access and that the semiannual testing returned consistent data in April.

He described preparing higher-level technical analyses (phase 2/3) used elsewhere to argue that low-level PFAS detections 0.75 miles away are unlikely to be sourced by the landfill based on chemistry; he cautioned, however, that Massachusetts regulation places the burden on responsible parties to provide convincing data to demonstrate otherwise and that any submission to DEP could take months to prepare.
