School board adopts revised crisis plan adding SRO, shifts from ALICE to SRP

The Silver Lake J1 School District board on Aug. 25 approved an updated crisis plan that adds duties for a school resource officer and replaces the district’s prior ALICE guidance with the standard response protocol (SRP).

District Administrator (S2) presented the revisions as recommendations from the Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Association (WSSCA) and said the sheriff’s office participated in the review. "We moved from, the Alice language to the standard response protocol," S2 said, adding the update also incorporates reunification procedures, tornado and severe-weather drill updates, and protocols for chemical spills and railroad hazards. The board discussed how teachers’ classroom "grab" bags would be used for attendance and first aid during relocations.

Board members asked for additional detail on implementation and training. S2 told the board that staff will receive Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training and Blue Card certification and that a team will be trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) on Sept. 28 to handle any future seclusion or restraint situations. "Each staff member will receive a CPI blue card certification," S2 said.

The board voted to approve the crisis plan (motion carried, 4 ayes). The district administrator said the leadership team will return with midyear financial and implementation updates, and the board noted it expects a drill schedule and follow-up on the location/contents of teacher grab bags and AED audits.
