Commissioners debate benefits package for prospective county administrator; relocation denied by consensus

Human resources director Elizabeth Ward presented commissioners with a menu of potential benefits to include in recruitment for a new county administrator: a county‑issued cell phone or a stipend, a county vehicle, retirement contribution options, professional development (already budgeted), a childcare stipend and relocation assistance. Staff provided cost figures for the phone option and an estimated vehicle purchase price for commissioners to consider.

Commission debate centered on equitable treatment across county positions and recruitment needs. Several commissioners said childcare stipends were not standard countywide and expressed reservations about advertising additional benefits. After discussion, the board "agreed by consensus not to offer relocation assistance," the clerk announced.

Ward said professional development funds already exist in the budget and retirement contribution remains a negotiable item for final candidate offers, while commissioners said they preferred leaving most items open to negotiation with candidates rather than advertising them as guaranteed benefits.
