Huntington proclaims September 2026 Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month

Amanda McIntosh, the suicide prevention liaison with 4 Corners Community Behavioral Health, asked the council to declare September 2026 Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and described local events and resources for people affected by suicide.

"I come over you tonight to request that you proclaim September 2026 suicide prevention and awareness month," McIntosh said, reading a proclamation that cites state and national data and lists local resources.

McIntosh told the council the proclamation draws attention to local support systems and upcoming community activities, including a candlelight vigil at Huntington City Park and a 13th annual hope walk at Price Peace Gardens. She urged residents to use evidence-based trainings and to seek help early, saying that resources exist locally, statewide and nationwide, including the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

The council moved and seconded the proclamation and voted to approve it. Mayor and council members expressed thanks for the presentation and for the volunteer coordinators organizing the events.

The proclamation, as read to the council, also cites American Foundation for Suicide Prevention statistics and encourages residents to "recognize how serious suicide is and the steps each of us can take to protect those around us." It asks the community to support awareness, safe messaging, and training programs aimed at reducing suicide risk.
