Library director reports record circulation, outlines new programs and capital projects

Kelly, the library director, presented the libraryannual report required by city code and told the council that "In fiscal year 26, we circulated 35,946 of our physical materials." The director said the library also recorded more than 11,000 digital circulations and hosted nearly 700 programs that drew almost 6,000 attendees.

The director framed the work in four strategic priorities: circulation and patron engagement, community outreach, facilities and collections, and staff and volunteers. Kelly said residents of Vinton accounted for 62% of physical circulation, off-site outreach produced nearly 2,500 attendees over 138 programs, and the library opened over 250 new cards. On budget, the director reported roughly $450,000 in total expenses with about $75,000 from private donations and grants and said the library calculates community benefit from circulation at nearly $600,000.

Kelly highlighted near-term projects and partnerships: "We're very close to kicking off our new Riverside StoryWalk," a collaboration with the parks department and Benton Unlimited, and "Vinton's Big Read kicks off in September." The director said exterior tuckpointing and landscaping work are scheduled using this year's budget and that the library will enter the State Library of Iowa reaccreditation cycle this year.

Council members thanked Kelly and the board for the report. Whitney Bowen was noted in the meeting as present from the library board. The director answered follow-up questions from council; no formal action was required.
