High school firefighter cadet program expands internship pipeline with local fire department

The board heard a presentation and short video about a firefighter cadet internship program that pairs high-school students with the Orem Fire Department for hands-on learning and potential career pathways.

Fire department staff described the program as a community recruiting and career-education partnership: students attend after-school sessions, earn credit and participate on crews and selected calls. "It's a true symbiotic relationship," a fire department presenter said, describing how the program benefits both students and local emergency services. Staff said they typically enroll 8–10 students per class, the student cost is about $200 for medical clearances and uniforms, and graduates sometimes move into firefighting roles in surrounding communities.

Board members and attendees praised the confidence gains staff observed and said cadet participants presented improved leadership and skills during a recent graduation. The department said it will continue recruiting through social media and community outreach and intends to invite alumni back to participate in prevention nights and mentorship.
