Board opens robust‑schools boundary study, signals transparency on potential closures

The board opened a boundary study driven by a 'robust schools' framework that places teacher quality, leadership, school culture and safety as foundational elements for district decisions. Superintendent Joe Jensen said the board voted in July to study a configuration plan and tonight signaled it will name potentially affected schools rather than study a single site in isolation.

"We're saying we're gonna name Sarah Park and Hillcrest situation," the superintendent said in explaining a transparency approach meant to reflect the broader effects of any closure or consolidation. He and other board members argued that studying a planning district holistically yields more long-term options and may reduce surprise impacts on adjacent schools.

Board members and community participants raised repeated concerns about school identity and transitions. Several speakers urged the district to plan for how the community will mourn and celebrate a school if it closes, to preserve feeder patterns where possible, and to involve PTAs and school-community councils in transition planning. Administrators said planned focus groups and engagement sessions will be scheduled for affected communities and that the board intends to treat renaming and legacy choices as community decisions.

The study will examine multiple configuration scenarios — including moving ninth grade to high school and shifting sixth grade to middle school — and will consider enrollment projections and facility capacities. Board and staff emphasized the process will pay close attention to the 'foundation' (teaching, leadership, safety) rather than only facility sizes.
